Thursday, May 27, 1999 10am -- ParisIt's Thursday morning and I just got off the redeye flight from Abu Dhabi. This past set of travel has really taken it out of me. I've literally been travelling for nearly a month, with only 2 days here in Paris. I'm exhausted. One week was a pleasure trip to Hawaii, but quickly afterward I was tired again. The past 10 days I was in South Africa, Riyadh, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi. The flight from South Africa to Riyadh was a killer. I actually had to take five separate flights to get there. Johannesburg was of course nasty. But I spent a day in Capetown, and it was magnificent. That is a really beautiful city.I have lots of pictures, so here goes:
I first this month finished my International Marketing course. The students were really great, and we finished the course with final projects- they presented taking a product or service into an international market. So they chose what product and market they went to. I must say all were excellent and the final day presentations were fun. So I took photos of them and here's the class photo:

I'd like to say here to the students offically - "Thanks everyone, it was a great time and I'll bet I learned as much, if not more, than you... good luck!"That afternoon I left for San Francisco....

So my friend Frank has a new dog- it's a cairns terrier and he named the dog Toffee - I guess after the philosopher Aristophanes. Toffee is only about 16 weeks old, but he's exceptionally cool. Beautiful colors, too. I think he's not yet housetrained, but learning. I was in California for a customer visit, then...After that I went to Hawaii- I was in desperate need of a vacation. Vanessa came at the last minute.... it has been her dream to go there, so who am I to cheat her out of that.... only it was literally a 2-day flight.

In my usual 'relaxed' way I spent the entire time working on my advanced dive certification. The diving was exceptional... saw some manta's, sharks, and the usual cavalcade of tropical fishies.... Vanessa had never dove before, so she snorkeled...

So Vanessa's parents met this guy, Tom Mitchell, from Hawaii over 20 years ago who was living on Maui. She had had a postcard from him pinned to her wall the entire time she was growing up. She insisted we look him up - it turned out that he is a living legend in Lahaina, Maui - he owns a frame shop called the Maui Frame Shop, and lives in communal area of old Lahaina. His apartment is literally outside- his shower, living room, etc are all outdoors. He turned out to be a great character and lots of fun to talk with!!
Next we stopped in San Francisco and back to Paris for a couple days, then I had to leave on business. This trip was for 8 (long!) days. I was in Johannesburg, Capetown, Riyadh, Kuwait City and Abu Dhabi....

I had never been to Kuwait before. It was over 45 degrees and extremely humid. That is probably the hottest I've ever seen anything. You couldn't tell any damage from the war, and in fact the city was mostly extremely modern. I did find a couple interesting areas, however.... The Emir of Kuwait had just this past week decreed that women could both stand in elections and vote, so there was a lot of interesting debate going on.... the hotel was exceptional (Sheraton Kuwait).

So that's it for this month. I'm travelling next to Munich and Monaco. Then on Thursday June 11, I go to pick up my new car!!!!
