Tom's Travel Journal (Part I)
March and April 1999
Lundi le 27 Avril, 1999 - 9:00am
It's been a great couple months.  I haven't posted here in a bit, so this will be a long one- I've broken it into parts so the download time won't take forever.  I've taken tons of pictures and will give a little montage of what's been happening lately.  I've been travelling like crazy, of course.  I was in California three times, Germany 4 times, Hungary, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, plus a couple personal trips, one to New York City and one to Washington DC.  March seemed difficult, I was really getting sick of France and the French but then realized that is was more the weather than anything.  I can get grey here for long periods of time, with rain.  But lately the sun's been out and the weather has improved dramatically.  So it looks like spring is here.  Paris is incredible this time of year- the flowers and trees are blooming and the city seems to buzz with life.

New York City visit- I went to see the play 'Death of a Salesman', with Brian Dennehey.  It was excellent.  Here's a review.

So I decided to buy a car!  This was a dream of mine for a long time, and I decided to splurge.  Paris is great to get around but I feel frustrated when I want to go away on the weekends.  The train has limited access and I love the freedom of just jumping in the car to get away.  This car is the most beautiful thing.  I have been stopping at Carlsen Motors in Palo Alto, California about once or twice a month for years.  I would just ogle and drool on the autos there.  And this past visit in March I decided to finally go for it.  This is the coolest program.  I ordered the car in California, to my specifications.  It's being built as I write this.  The program is called Tourist Delivery.  This means that I go to Germany to pick up the car when it's finished, sometime around the end of June.  It's built to US specifications (otherwise I would never get it into the States).  Then I can drive the thing here in Europe for up to a year.  I take it back to the manufacturer and they ship it to the US, free of charge.  The best part is after this, I don't have to pay sales tax.  More on the car later...
